John James Audubon discovered for science a bird that he named in honor of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). The nickname for the not very tall and bellicose French emperor was Le Petit Caporal or The Small Corporal. For the later octavo edition of Birds of America, Audubon replaced the male Pigeon Hawk that appears in the first edition of Birds of America (Plate 92) with the Le Petit Caporal.
