For as much time as John James Audubon spent in Charleston, South Carolina, there is a good chance he visited the hallowed ground of the McLeod Plantation. If so, he must have admired the Carolina laurelcherry (Prunus caroliniana) that is well established there to this day. And in the tree he must have also spotted Northern cardinals. What cardinal could resist that berry?!
